Titans Hire John McNulty as QBs Coach, Kevin Patullo as Asst. Wide Receivers Coach

Posted Jan 22, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- The Tennessee Titans added John McNulty as quarterbacks coach and Kevin Patullo as assistant wide receivers coach.

McNulty has 23 years of coaching experience, including 11 years of NFL experience. He joins the Titans after one season as the quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McNulty also spent four seasons on Ken Whisenhunt’s staff in Arizona, three years (2009-11) as wide receivers coach and one year (2012) as quarterbacks coach.

“John is a coach that has worked for me before both with wide receivers and quarterbacks and I felt good about the job he did for me, but what I am really excited about was seeing him grow in this profession and seeing the job he did with the young quarterback in Tampa,” said Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt. “That position is so important for us, it is nice to have a coach with his track record and had success working with a young quarterback, because that position is so critical.”

In his one season in Tampa Bay, McNulty guided rookie QB Mike Glennon to the top passer rating (82.0) among rookies last year and was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team. Glennon set rookie franchise marks for passing yards and touchdowns.

“Obviously excited about the opportunity. I was in Jacksonville when Tennessee was on its roll in the AFC and I know what the city and stadium were like during that time and we are looking to get back to those days in Nashville,” said McNulty. “I am excited to get to work with Jake, Ryan and the group. Jake, as everyone knows, is a competitive, smart, tough football player that the team rallies around. I think everyone knows his best days are ahead of him. So I am excited about the opportunity to work with him – a guy who is talented, hungry and smart.”

McNulty spent four seasons on the Cardinals staff. He joined the team in 2009 as the wide receivers coach for three years. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was selected to three Pro Bowls and earned two All-Pro selections (2009, 2011) in their time together.

McNulty spent five seasons (2004-08) with Rutgers in a variety of capacities. He joined the staff as the wide receivers coach for two seasons, was elevated to assistant offensive coordinator/quarterbacks for one season and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for his final two seasons. As offensive coordinator in 2007, he led an offense that set school records for total offense (5,841 yards), points scored (421) and first downs (295). They also became the first team in NCAA history to have a 3,000-yard passer (Mike Teel-3,14), a 2,000-yard rusher (Ray Rice-2,069) and two 1,000-yad receivers (Kenny Britt-1,232; Tiquan Underwood-1,100) in the same season.

He entered the coaching ranks in 1991 as a graduate assistant for the University of Michigan. He spent three seasons with the Wolverines and then coached wide receivers for three seasons at the University of Connecticut. His first NFL coaching position came in 1998 with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their quality control coach until 2002. He then spent one season as the wide receivers coach for the Dallas Cowboys in 2003.

McNulty was raised in Pennsylvania and played safety for Penn State (1988-90). He and his wife, Kim, have four daughters – Abigail, Allison, Megan and Kaitlyn.

Patullo joins the Titans after spending three seasons (2010-12) with the Buffalo Bills and two seasons (2007-08) with the Kansas City Chiefs. In his three years with the Bills, he was the quality control coach for the offense and added assistant wide receivers to his title in his final year. He entered the NFL coaching ranks as a quality control coach for the Chiefs in 2007.

Patullo played quarterback and wide receiver at South Florida and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Bulls from 2003-04. He then became a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona from 2004-06.
