Titans Players React to Being Named Team Captains

Posted Sep 3, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The votes have been tallied and head coach Ken Whisenhunt announced the Titans captains for the upcoming season on Wednesday.

The team will have five captains that remain the same for the duration of the season. Jake Locker and Nate Washington will serve as the offensive captains, Wesley Woodyard and Jurrell Casey represent the defense, and George Wilson will be the lone special teams captain.

It’s been a big week for Casey, who earlier signed a contract extension and has now been chosen as a captain by his peers.

“It just shows that my teammates respect me for my game and what I do on and off the field,” said Casey humbly. “It’s a great joy to let these guys know I’m going to go out there and lead them.”

Everyone has a leadership style, and for Casey it’s all about leading by example.

“I just come out to do my job,” said Casey. “If I wasn’t a captain I would show up like I’m still a captain and at the end of the day they see all my hard work. I’m not a vocal guy. I like to show what I can do on the field and let the guys follow from there.”

Being a captain isn’t anything new to Woodyard, who said he’s been a captain for 12 consecutive seasons going back to a high school. That doesn’t mean it’s an honor that he takes lightly.

“Any time you’re voted on by your peers as a captain it means a lot,” Woodyard said.

Washington explained that the honor of being a captain means more to him than any individual statistic he could have.

“To be voted team captain means the guys in this locker room respect the work that you put in,” said Washington. “There are no days off being a captain. I appreciate the opportunity and the quality of work that these guys expect from me.”

There will also be a sixth captain that changes week-to-week, but Whisenhunt didn’t give any details as to how it will be selected.
