Mock Draft Monday: 52 Days Away

Posted Mar 9, 2015

TitansOnline.com beat writer Joe Fann pulls together the latest round of mock drafts in this edition of "Mock Draft Monday."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Only two months remain until fans learn what Ruston Webster and the Tennessee Titans do with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Will they take Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston? Do they go with the best defensive player available in Leonard Williams? Would they decide edge rusher is the top priority and take Dante Fowler, Vic Beasley, Randy Gregory or Shane Ray? Will they trade the pick?

Who knows. In all likelihood, Webster and his staff are still far from decided with what to do at number two. Until then, Titans Online continues with opinions of draft experts around the country.

The Latest Mocks:

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. submitted his mock draft 3.0 and still has the Titans selecting Williams. He also noted that Tennessee has plenty of influence when setting a price tag for other teams looking to move up in the draft.

“No change here from my previous mock, with a reminder that this pick is a high-leverage spot because it's the one spot you can trade up to and assure yourself of getting Marcus Mariota or even Jameis Winston if Mariota were to go No. 1 overall,” explained Kiper. “That said, I'm not projecting trades here and I think Tennessee is in position to take the best football player available in the draft. Williams has the potential to be a force early in his career, make your defensive line better against both the run and the pass and offer scheme versatility. If Winston is available, he becomes the pick, but Williams makes sense.”

The CBS Sports trio of Rob Rang, Dane Brugler and Pete Prisco all have updated predictions. Rang thinks the Titans select Marcus Mariota while Brugler and Prisco say the pick will be Williams.

“Mariota's success in college was enhanced by his fit in Oregon's scheme, but that doesn't mean he can't succeed in a more traditional NFL offense,” Rang said.

“Oregon's Marcus Mariota should be in the conversation here, but if the Titans decide to stick with Zach Mettenberger as the starting quarterback, then Williams becomes a logical choice,” said Brugler. “Not only is he the best player available, but he also fits what Dick LeBeau and Ray Horton want to do on defense.”

“He's the best player in the draft. They have to get better on defense and I think they like QB Zach Mettenberger,” Prisco said of his prediction.

Dan Kadar of SB Nation is also on the Williams train.

“If you truly believe in taking the best player available, then this pick should be Williams,” said Kadar. “He’s the draft’s top talent and a force on the defensive line. Williams gets the billing as the top player this draft because of his power, aggression and athleticism. The only obvious flaw in Williams’ game is he’ll sometimes come out of his stance too high and lose leverage.”

Bleacher Report’s Ian Wharton says the Titans need an EDGE rusher and should go with Clemson’s Vic Beasley.

“Not only does Beasley have dominating tape, but he's also an elite athlete in the truest sense of the phrase,” said Wharton. “His ability to be an impact pass-rusher on Day 1 is something the Titans desperately need. Paired with Jurrell Casey, the Titans will have one of the better young one-two punches in their front seven in the league.”

Walter Cherepinsky of WalterFootball.com updated his mock draft and added a fifth round. He has the Titans going with Mariota, Florida State OL Cameron Erving (previously G Josue Matias), Utah DE/OLB Nate Orchard (previously DE/OLB Danielle Hunter), Syrucuse S Durell Eskridge (previously S Chris Hackett) and Ole Miss CB Senquez Golson.

Also from WalterFootball.com, Charlie Campbell has a new five-round mock draft. Campbell says the Titans will go with Mariota, Florida State CB P.J. Williams, Orchard, Virginia S Anthony Harris (previously CB Byron Jones) and Wisconsin RT Rob Havenstein.
