Three Quick Hits from Thursday's Practice

Posted Oct 5, 2017

TitansOnline.com Senior Writer and Editor Jim Wyatt offers three quick hits from Thursday's practice at Saint Thomas Sports Park.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans just wrapped up practice on Thursday at Saint Thomas Sports Park.

On Sunday, the team will face the Dolphins in Miami.

Three quick hits:

Dick LeBeau: “That’s not us”

The Titans defense gave up 50 points in Sunday’s loss to the Texans, but defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau didn’t lose his sense of humor.

“I was kind of hoping you guys might call in sick today,” LeBeau said with a smile as reporters approached him for the regularly scheduled Thursday meeting with the veteran DC.

The Titans lost 57-14 to the Texans, although the final touchdown came on an interception return for a touchdown. LeBeau wasn’t counting points, and he wasn’t pleased with the performance one bit.

“That’s not us,” LeBeau said. “And we’re going to prove that’s not us. That is not us. We played a very poor game, let them hold the ball, let them go on long drives, never gave our offense a chance to get the ball back, and you’re not going to have success if we don’t play better than that. That’s my take on it.”

The Titans face the Dolphins and quarterback Jay Cutler on Sunday.

Miami has struggled this season on offense, and the Titans want to keep them from getting on track this week.

“That was a very bad game (vs Houston), and we have to own it,” LeBeau said. “We have to look at that and see if we can get better.”

Getting Cassel ready

Titans starting quarterback Marcus Mariota was limited again on Thursday, and his availability for Sunday’s game remains a question mark.

Back-up Matt Cassel, meanwhile, has been getting extra work this week to get ready in case he’s needed.

On Sunday in Houston, Cassel came off the bench to replace Mariota, and he struggled. Getting significant practice reps should help Cassel in the event Mariota is a no-go, Titans offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie said.

“And he has the experience, the experience of playing and being prepared,” Robiskie said of Cassel. “He knows how to prepare. I would say three, maybe four times this year I have used him as an example for all the young guys – ‘This is how you do it. This is how you prepare and get ready.’ Matt has been phenomenal every week and every day. He is always preparing and getting ready so if his number is called he’s ready to go.”

Injuries

Titans guard Quinton Spain (turf toe) was a full participant in practice. Cornerback Tye Smith (neck) was also a full participant after being limited on Wednesday.

Titans receiver Corey Davis (hamstring) and safety Johnthan Cyprien (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday. Titans coach Mike Mularkey said earlier in the week the two players aren’t expected to play on Sunday.
