Titans Face Tough Decision at Tight End Position

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —Titans tight end Phillip Supernaw scored a touchdown on Thursday night, but he hardly had time to celebrate.

He botched the spike immediately afterward, which ruined the moment.

"I actually haven't heard a congratulations on the touchdown yet,'' said Supernaw, shaking his head. "All I've heard is heckling on the spike. When you do something like that you expect to catch some, I guess.

"That actually wipes away the touchdown in my eyes because that was terrible. So terrible."

The Titans wrapped up the preseason with a 24-17 win over the Vikings at Nissan Stadium.

Once again, the team showed off its depth at tight end. Supernaw caught a one-yard touchdown pass, and finished the preseason with nine catches for 96 yards.  The only player with more catches and receiving yards than Supernaw in the preseason: Tight end Chase Coffman, who had 12 catches for 189 yards and two touchdowns in four preseason contests.

Coffman had four catches for 59 yards against the Vikings.

Now comes the hard part. The Titans are expected to keep only four tight ends on the 53-man roster, which means one of them won't make it with Delanie Walker, Anthony Fasano and Craig Stevens around. In reality, there's not even a guarantee the Titans will keep four.

Both players felt they did all they could do.

"There's always a couple of things you can think back on, but I'd like to think I had a lot of great opportunities and made the most of it. We'll see,'' Coffman said. "I am so grateful just for the opportunity to make those plays. This is the first place they have fed me the ball like that and it's a lot of fun.

"I've had sleepless nights before and I've been cut...We'll see what happens tomorrow and see whatever they decide."

Supernaw, who spent time with the Ravens and Chiefs last season after spending the previous two seasons with the Texans, felt good about what he accomplished in the preseason as well.

That spike, though.

The ball slipped out of Supernaw's right hand as he was trying to slam it to the turf.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt called it "horrible."

"What would you call it?'' quarterback Marcus Mariota said politely. "I saw him go to spike it, I don't know if he really finished it."

Titans tackle Taylor Lewan said it was a "Not Top 10" moment.

"Supernaw really let it go,'' Lewan said. "A poor man's (Rob) Gronkowski trying to get it done, you know what I am saying?  The guy's a stud though. I love that guy. He is absolutely awesome. That guy's energy and fire every single day, that's what you want on your team."

Supernaw managed to walk out of the stadium with a smile on Thursday night.

Even something as forgettable as the spike fail might keep his mind off the uncertainty he now faces.

"You can't think about it,'' he said. "I don't really know what I am going to do. I am a big time golfer, I'd like to think that is my best sport. I don't know of any courses around here but I'll try and figure it out."
