Titans GM on Top Spot: "We are not married to the pick"

Posted Mar 21, 2016

Titans GM Jon Robinson on No.1 spot in NFL Draft: “We are not married to the pick.”

BOCA RATON, Fla. — The No.1 pick in April’s NFL Draft is for sale, but it’s going to have to be at the right price.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson made that clear here on Monday at the NFL owners meetings.

“We are not married to the pick,’’ Robinson said. “I would say we’re open to any options.”

Over the weekend, while speaking at 104.5-FM’s annual SportsFest at Nissan Stadium, Robinson said it would take a “king’s ransom” for the Titans to consider trading too far back in the draft order. The comment made headlines nationally, leading some to speculate the Titans aren’t interested in talking trade deals with other teams.

Robinson, who’s here attending his first owners meeting as a general manager, said that’s not necessarily the case. The Titans are willing to listen, and Robinson said he’s heard from other teams. Right now, the conversations have been more exploratory in nature.

“I would say that statement was taken out of context a little bit,’’ Robinson said. “I think the question was: What would it take to move way back in the draft? And my answer was: “It would take several picks for that to happen, a king’s ransom for lack of a better term.

“The reality is we are open to any option that makes our football team better. If that is picking a player, if that is moving the pick, whatever is the best option for the pick, we’ll do it. It is much like a play-call sheet. There’s a lot of play calls listed on those sheets, and whatever call gives us the best opportunity to move the football or stop them from moving the football, it’s the same approach we’re going to take leading up to the draft.”

Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil, Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey and Ohio State defensive lineman Joey Bosa have all been popular picks for the Titans in mock drafts.  Other players have been linked to the Titans via trade.

Robinson and coach Mike Mularkey attended Ohio State’s Pro Day last week in Columbus, when they saw Bosa go through drills.

The Titans are scheduled to attend more pro days in the near future.

“It will be pretty heavy next week, and we have 30 visits set up in early April,’’ Robinson said. “We’ll start to meet with those guys for more extended periods of time. We had a good day at Ohio State recently and we have some days coming up with a lot of others players, too.”
