Update on Titans QB Marcus Mariota After Thursday’s Practice

Posted Oct 12, 2017

Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota practiced again on Thursday, but Titans head coach Mike Mularkey wants to see him do more before he declares him ready for Monday night’s game against the Colts.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota took another positive step on Thursday, but his head coach wants to see more.

“He did more today,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said of Mariota after practice. “And I think it was positive, what he did. We’ll just have to see how it feels in the morning after what he did today. But he did a little bit more than (Wednesday). … He threw some balls, and did some more.”

The Titans are hoping Mariota will be able to return to action against the Colts on Monday night at Nissan Stadium.

Mariota, inactive on Sunday in Miami because of a hamstring injury, still hasn’t done a full sprint, according to Mularkey.

Mularkey said he’s been encouraged by Mariota’s progress, but he wants to see more.

He said again Thursday the quarterback will have to be able to prove to coaches and trainers he has good mobility.

“I want to be very smart about how we do this,” Mularkey said. “It is more than this game. It is a lot of games to be concerned about.

“I’ll have to see more than what I’ve seen to this point.”

Matt Cassel would start again at quarterback if Mariota’s can’t go.

Cassel completed 21-of-32 passes for 141 yards against the Dolphins, with a touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked six times.

Mariota was limited in practices last week because of the hamstring injury he suffered against the Texans. He spent a good portion of last week rehabbing the injury.

On the season, Mariota has completed 66-of-110 passes for 792 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

“It is a big factor that we get that much (extra) time,” Mularkey said of the game being on Monday night. “That plays a big part in it.”
