MIAMI – The day before Super Bowl LIV, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been recognized for his super season.

Tannehill on Saturday was named AP Comeback Player of the Year here at the NFL Honors event at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Tannehill, a former Miami Dolphin who still has a home on the Fort Lauderdale area, was in attendance a week after playing in his first Pro Bowl.

"It's an honor," Tannehill said. "It's something you never want to be initially up for, but it is such an honor just to be recognized for fighting through the adversity I've had to face over the past couple of years.

"I am so thankful for everyone who voted for me, and all of my teammates. It wouldn't be possible without a whole group of people that surrounds me and helps me on a daily basis. It feels good after a lot of hard work to get to this point."

Tannehill led the NFL with a 117.5 rating in 2019, his first season with the Titans. He guided the Titans to a pair of playoff wins – at New England and Baltimore – and into the AFC Championship Game, where the Titans lost to the Chiefs.

During the regular season, Tannehill threw for 2,742 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He's guided the Titans to a 9-4 mark, including playoffs, since taking over as the team's starter in Week 7.

In January, Tannehill was selected as both the 2019 NFL Comeback Player of the Year and the 2019 Most Improved Player of the Year by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA).

Tannehill became just the second player since the Most Improved Player of the Year award was instituted in 2000 to receive both the PFWA Most Improved and the Comeback Player of the Year awards in the same season, joining Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna (2003).

Tannehill spent his first seven seasons with the Dolphins, where his highest passer rating in a season came during the 2016 season, when he posted a 93.5 rating. In 2018, Tannehill threw for 1,979 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions with the Dolphins, with a 92.7 rating, before being traded to the Titans in the offseason.

Here on Saturday, Tannehill talked about how tough it was at the beginning of the season to watch from the sideline. He got his chance to step into to the starting spot in Week 7, in place of quarterback Marcus Mariota.

"As a competitor, just not being in the starting position, and just fighting through all the different things you have to navigate with that," Tannehill said. "And then getting an opportunity to go play, I knew I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity and not let it slip, and just have fun.

"Because I didn't get play, I didn't get to enjoy doing what I love for a while. So being able to get back out there, have a lot of fun, and lead the team to wins … and to be a part of that was something special."
