Our next spotlight features Kerry, a four-year Titans Cheerleader, captain and 2006 Pro Bowl representative.
Kerry is retiring from the team in order to focus on her career and family, but
her attitude and style have made a lasting impression on the team. She will be
missed greatly. Below, she reflects on her amazing experience over the last four
years.
You have cheered four years with the Titans. What are some of your most memorable
experiences?
My first game and first year on the squad were extremely memorable. It was all
so new to me then, and I was honestly in awe every time I was on the field. However,
my second year on the team I was selected to represent our squad at the 2006 Pro
Bowl in Hawaii and it really does not get more memorable than that!!! It was
truly a trip of a lifetime for me and an experience I will never forget.
What factors came into play when deciding to retire from the squad?
Actually, this year really felt like my “senior” year in cheering for the Titans.
In my time as a college and high school cheerleader, that is the timeline that
I know best. Since it was my fourth year and I was a captain on the team, it
really felt right to move on after this season. Also, my husband and I have been
married for almost seven years and we are ready to start trying to have a family.
We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first child this fall!!
What are your plans and goals for the future?
My plans are BUSY! HA! Currently, my husband and I are expanding our horizons
in the business world by opening three businesses over a period of 18 months.
We have started our own S-Corporation together and through that business are the
owners/franchisees of three Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream and Treateries. We have opened
stores in Jackson, TN, Huntsville, AL, and our current project is Hendersonville,
TN.
What is your favorite Titans moment?
Making the squad! April 25, 2004 is a day I will never forget! After not cheering
for a few years, it was an awesome feeling to get back in the swing of things
and prepare for tryouts. I knew trying out for the team would be very tough,
but I knew I wanted to be a Tennessee Titans Cheerleader. Hearing my name announced
for making the team was incredible. I had my entire family there, my husband’s
family there, lots of friends, and my high school cheerleading team that I coached
was even there to support. It was a great day and one of my fondest moments.
If I could do one thing in the world, I would:
If I could do one thing in the world, I would add a good three more hours to
each day. This would definitely allow me to sleep more! HA!
In your opinion, what characteristics does it take to represent the Tennessee
Titans Cheerleaders and which characteristic best fits you?
I believe I have all of these traits as do all of the members of the Titans Cheerleading
Squad. I think it really takes having the “IT” factor to represent the Tennessee
Titans Cheerleaders. This includes: poise, grace, confidence, great smile, strong
public presence, community minded, and the ability to capture a crowd’s attention.
What will you take from your four year tenure on the squad?
Honestly, being a Titans cheerleader has been about personal development and
evolution over a fast-paced four years of my life. I would often hear questions
about cheering such as "why do you do that" or "how much are you paid to be out
there?” I realize that sometimes it can be hard for people to understand our
true motives as cheerleaders for the Titans. What others should know is that it
is honestly not about the fame and glory, it is about the experience. It is about
being able to stand up in front of others and exude a new found confidence and
feel completely comfortable in your own skin. It is about being around a special
group of women that lifts you up and encourages your achievements. Being on a
team of this magnitude is about women helping women. In a world where often times
men finish first and women are still trying to catch up, we are a proud group
of women that support each other and value each other's accomplishments.
I have been influenced by some incredible women, namely our director, Stacie
Kinder, and an amazing, exuberant group of women for four years. Since gracing
the stage in 2004 at my first tryout, I have become more mature, more articulate,
changed career paths when I never would have had the guts to do it before, and
developed the ability to exude confidence under even the most extreme circumstances.
I am happiest when:
This is a simple answer, but I am happiest when I am spending time with family,
friends, and of course my dog. Life is so busy, that the few times I get to just
“hang out” with my family and friends are truly cherished moments for me.
My proudest moment to date is:
Completing my Masters Degree with a 4.0 is my proudest moment to date. I believe
education is incredibly important and obtaining a Masters Degree was something
that I completely decided to do on my own. At the time, I was teaching Marketing
and Business classes in high school and went to school at night, weekends, and
all during the summer to complete my degree. Also, I was newly married and worked
at Sonic Drive In part time as a Car Hop to pay for my degree. I decided that
I did not want to take out loans and go into financial debt for my education,
so in between teaching and going to class, I worked at Sonic to pay for my education.
I can remember the days of rolling change at night from my tip money!
If you could say one thing to the current squad, what would it be?
Never say never, work hard to be your personal best, always smile, appreciate
all that life has given you, and take lots and lots of pictures because time flies
when you are having fun!!! |
