Biography

 
PRO: The Titans signed Rishard Matthews early in the 2016 free agency period to bring veteran leadership and big-play potential to the wide receiver position.  The 6-foot, 217-pounder is coming off his most successful season in 2015 in which he recorded career highs with 43 receptions, 662 receiving yards and four touchdowns.  Matthews spent his first four NFL campaigns with the Miami Dolphins after being drafted by the team in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.  The University of Nevada product is a versatile player, having lined up outside and in the slot with the Dolphins.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
•    In 2015, Matthews set career-highs with 43 catches, 662 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions despite playing in just 11 games for the Miami Dolphins.
•    In 2013, Matthews appeared in all 16 games with the Dolphins and hauled in 41 receptions for 448 yards with two touchdowns.

•    Matthews’ father, Andre, is a retired U.S. Marine Corps master sergeant.
•    In October 2015, Matthews’ half-brother Christopher Ruiz was killed while serving as a retired Marine working as a private defense contractor in Afghanistan.  Ruiz served in the Marines for 10 years, and served overseas in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was in Afghanistan training locals to fight for their country, when he was killed.  Ruiz was one of six U.S. Airmen and five other civilian contractors killed in the crash of an Air Force C-130 as it tried to put down at the Jalalabad Airfield on Oct. 2.
•    Matthews wears a bracelet with the words “Forever by my side.” It has his fallen brother’s name on it, along with the Marines logo. He wears the bracelet every day.

•    The Santa Ana, Calif., native was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round (227th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.
•     Signed by the Titans as an unrestricted free agent on March 11, 2016.

COLLEGE:
•    Was a two-year starter at Nevada (2010-11).  Also attended Bakersfield College (2009) and Santa Ana (Calif.) College (2007-08).
•    Played in 26 career games with 25 starts at Nevada and recorded 147 receptions for 2,243 yards (15.4 avg.) and 13 touchdowns.  Added 10 rushes for 75 yards and two scores.  Returned 48 punts for 551 yards (11.5 avg.) with two scores and totaled 91 yards on five kickoff returns (18.2 avg.).
•    As a junior (2011), started 12 games and named second-team All-American and first-team All-Western Athletic Conference as a punt returner and receiver.  Recorded 91 receptions for 1,364 yards (15.4 avg.) and eight touchdowns.  Led the WAC and ranked 10th nationally with an average of 7.58 receptions per game.  Returned 23 punts for 307 yards (13.4 avg.).  Posted seven games with 100-plus receiving yards, including two games of 200-plus yards.
•    As a sophomore (2010), played in 14 games with 13 starts as a sophomore and was named as an honorable mention All-American and first-team All-WAC.  Recorded 56 receptions for 879 yards (15.7 avg.) and five touchdowns.  Scored twice on five carries for 76 yards (15.2 avg.).  Added 91 yards on five kickoff returns (18.2 avg.) and had 25 punt returns for 244 yards (9.8 avg.) with a touchdown.
•    In 2009, played in 11 games at Bakersfield College and led the team with 47 receptions for 619 yards (13.2 avg.) and six touchdowns.  Carried seven times for 20 yards and added 17 punt returns for 319 yards (18.9 avg.).
•    Attended Santa Ana (Calif.) College from 2007-08.
•    Majored in physical education at Nevada.

•    Attended Saddleback (Santa Ana, Calif.) High School and earned All-State, All-Golden West Football Conference and All-CIF Southern section honors as a receiver and strong safety as a senior.  
•    Caught 47 passes for 1,058 yards (22.5 avg.) and 16 touchdowns.  Added 98 yards and a score on 13 carries (7.5 avg.).  Produced a total of 132 points that included 22 touchdowns, as he scored twice on 11 punt returns for 270 yards (24.55 avg), adding two more touchdowns on 10 kickoff returns for 407 yards (40.7 avg).
•    Also lettered for the basketball team, as he averaged 9.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.3 blocks and 2.3 steals.
•    Attended Clovis (N.M.) High School in 2005 and rushed 29 times for 358 yards (12.4 avg.) and five touchdowns.  Added 43 receptions for 839 yards and 12 touchdowns.
