Biography

 
PRO: J.R. Tavai was originally signed by the Titans as a rookie free agent following the 2015 NFL Draft.  The outside linebacker spent the entire offseason and training camp with the club before being waived from the injured reserve list following training camp.  Once healthy, the Southern California product re-signed with the Titans’ practice squad in mid-November 2015 and was elevated to the 53-man roster in December.  The 6-foot-2-inch, 249-pounder is a skilled pass rusher who can also contribute on special teams.

CAREER TRANSACTIONS:  
•    The Redondo Beach, Fla., native was originally signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent on May 11, 2015.
•    Waived by the Titans from reserve/injured with an injury settlement on Sept. 10, 2015.
•    Signed by the Titans to their practice squad on Nov. 11, 2015.
•    Signed by the Titans to their active roster from the practice squad on Dec. 12, 2015.

TITANS TIDBITS:  
•    J.R. is the second-oldest of seven children—six sons and one daughter—in his family.  His mother, Nafanua, named six of them after athletes and one after a musician: Jordan, J.R., Jahlani, Justice, Jonah, Jagger and Serena. J.R. is named after a former rugby player named John Schuster.  

COLLEGE:
•    In four seasons at the University of Southern California, appeared in 40 total games with 20 starts and recorded 130 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
•    As a senior (2014), appeared in 11 games with nine starts and collected 53 tackles, including 13.5 tackles for loss, a team-best seven sacks, two passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a team-best three forced fumbles.  Earned 2014 All-Pac-12 honorable mention and won USC’s Chris Carlisle Courage Award.  Was an NFLPA Collegiate Bowl invitee.
•    As a junior (2013), spent most of the season at outside linebacker but also saw time at defensive end and tackle.  Appeared in 12 games with eight starts at outside linebacker and posted 56 tackles, 3.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss.  Named 2013 All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
•    As a sophomore (2012), served as a backup at both defensive tackle and defensive end.  Played in 10 games and started three times, including twice at defensive end and once at defensive tackle.  Registered 17 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and one pass defensed
•    As a freshman (2010), was a backup defensive tackle and appeared in seven games and recorded four tackles.
•    Graduated from Southern California with a degree in sociology in May 2015.

•    Attended Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) High School.  
•    As a senior in 2010, named Super Prep All-Farwest, All-CIF Northern Division Defensive MVP, South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay first team and All-Bay League MVP as a senior defensive lineman and fullback.
•    Totaled 95 tackles with 12 sacks on defense in 2010 and added 278 yards on 59 carries (4.7 avg.) with three touchdowns on offense.
•    As a junior in 2009, he was All-CIF Western Division Defensive MVP, South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay first team and All-Bay League Defensive MVP while making 92 tackles and seven sacks.
•    Was also on Mira Costa’s track team (shot put, with a best of 55-4 1/4, and discus throw), and earned 2011 South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay honors.
