Biography

 

PRO: The Titans re-signed cornerback Terrence Wheatley early in the 2012 offseason after Wheatley finished the 2011 campaign on the practice squad.  The 5-foot-9-inch speedster adds depth to a young and talented defensive backfield.  He will compete for time in the secondary in addition to contributing on special teams in 2012.  Before joining the Titans, Wheatley gained experience with the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills.   

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
• Prior to 2012, Wheatley spent a combined four seasons with the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills and Titans.  In those seasons, he totaled one start, four tackles, two passes defensed and three stops on special teams in 12 games.  He finished the 2011 season with Tennessee on the practice squad.  
• As a rookie with the Patriots in 2008, the former second-round pick played in six of the first eight games of the season before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. 

CAREER TRANSACTIONS: 
• The Plano, Texas, native was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft.
• Waived by the Patriots on Nov. 6, 2010.
• Signed by Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent on Nov. 9, 2010.
• Waived by the Jaguars on Sept. 3, 2011.
• Signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad on Sept. 13 and released Nov. 7.
• Signed to the Tennessee Titans practice squad on Dec. 14.
• Re-signed by the Titans as a free agent on Jan. 2, 2012.

COLLEGE:
• As a four-year starter at Colorado, ranked second in school history with 1,350 kickoff return yards.  Also had 14 career interceptions.  Earned first-team All-Big 12 honors by the Associated Press and the league’s coaches in each of his final two seasons. 
• As a senior (2007), had 42 tackles and five interceptions in the first 10 games. Started the first 10 games at left cornerback until being sidelined for the last two with a foot injury (came back to start in the Independence Bowl). Earned third-team All-America honors from Rivals.com and first-team All-Big 12 honors by the Associated Press and the league coaches. The coaches selected him as an honorable mention pick at kick returner.  He totaled 42 tackles and five interceptions. 
• Tied a school record when he became the first Buffalo since 1982 to intercept three passes in a game at Texas Tech off Graham Harrell.
• As a redshirt junior (2006), earned first-team All-Big 12 honors from the league coaches, while the Associated Press placed him on its second-team. Was one of four players on the team to start all 12 games, He tied for fifth on the team in tackles with 57 and led the team in interceptions (5) and passes broken up (11). 
• In 2005, was granted a medical hardship for the season (wrist injury).
• As a sophomore (2004), played in all 13 games and notched 33 tackles, three passes defensed and four interceptions, which ranked second on the team.  He became the 12th player in Colorado history to return his first career interception for a touchdown.
• As a freshman (2003), played in 12 games with two starts and contributed 24 tackles and five passes defensed.
• Graduated in December 2007 with a major in economics and a minor in business.

PERSONAL: 
• Single and splits time between Nashville and Murphy, Texas.
• Played running back and cornerback at Plano (Texas) East High School. Totaled 82 tackles and five interceptions as a senior and had 70 tackles and six interceptions as a junior. 
• Set school track and field records in the triple jump, long jump and 100 meters.  Was  the Texas Relay champion in the triple jump (48-5) as a junior and won the district championships in the 100, long jump and triple jump.
• His father, Randolph, ran track at Arizona State.
• Played both the saxophone and trumpet as a youth.
• Hosted the inaugural Charity Plano Youth Sports Festival in 2011 to benefit the Autism Society of America.
