Friday's Training Camp Observations

taylor180727

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans were back on the field for the second day of training camp on Friday at Saint Thomas Sports Park.

Here's a look at what stood out:

  • The offense bounced back with a vengeance on Friday. A day after the defense set the tone and won the day, I thought the offense rose to the occasion in the competition. Receivers made plays downfield, and the running backs busted into space. Quarterback Marcus Mariota delivered plenty of strikes.
  • Offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur is guiding the attack, of course, and he got a lot of love from one fan at camp. The fan, decked out in a Cubs bucket hat and a Western Michigan t-shirt, yelled things like "I love you, Matt LaFleur!," "Keep it up, Matt LaFleur!" and "Matt LaFleur, you're the man!" Mariota chuckled when asked about it after practice. Yeah, he heard it, too.
  • Perhaps the fan was excited about the play of receiver Corey Davis, who starred at Western Michigan, of course. Davis put on a show on Friday, catching passes all over the field. Davis caught a deep ball thrown by Mariota, and showed great concentration when the ball deflected into the air with Adoree' Jackson in coverage. Later, he went up high to snag a ball with cornerback Malcolm Butler in coverage. Davis had an early drop in one-on-ones, but he more than made up for it with a highlight-reel filling day.
  • Taywan Taylor joined the catch party. He made a one-handed catch downfield with Butler in coverage. Taylor had a nice day himself on Friday, and is looking more comfortable each day.
  • Coach Mike Vrabel once again was in the middle of the action. He strapped on a pad and took on the running backs in drills early in practice. He held his own.
  • The defense made some plays as well, and one of them was an interception by linebacker Jayon Brown. The second-year pro picked off a Mariota pass in the middle of the field, and was swarmed by teammates.
  • I liked the way Mariota settled down the young receivers after a shaky start in 1-on-1s, when there were a few drops. Deontay Burnett, Devin Ross, Jordan Veasy and Darius Jennings all responded with impressive catches. Veasy showed off his strength on a contested ball. Jennings was very active on the day.
  • Running backs Derrick Henry, Dion Lewis and David Fluellen all flashed during a team period early, busting through the line and into the secondary. Mariota sprinted to the outside and into space during the period.
  • Rookie linebacker Rashaan Evans stepped up to greet Henry in the backfield on one running play.
  • Tajae Shape made a handful of nice grabs, including one on the sideline.
  • Tackle Taylor Lewan, fresh off signing a contract extension, worked with the first team in practice after being limited in Thursday's practice.
  • Back-up quarterback Blaine Gabbert has impressed me early in camp. He has a strong arm, and he's been making some really nice throws.
  • Linebacker Brian Orakpo left practice at one point without his helmet, and did not return. Vrabel didn't not discuss Orakpo's status after practice.
  • Receiver Rishard Matthews did not practice for the second day in a row.
  • MTSU coach Rick Stockstill attended practice, and was greeted with a hug from Kevin Byard, his former star.
  • Vrabel revealed the team's offseason performers of the year: Byard, Henry, Davis and center Ben Jones. They'll get some perks, including some upgraded parking spots, for their hard work and commitment.

Next practice: Saturday, 9:50 am-noon.
